Spring in Central Virginia delights all the senses, and that was especially true on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at beautiful and historic Ashlawn-Highland, home of President and Mrs. James Monroe.
MACAA chose to hold its 22nd annual MEN WHO COOK! as an outdoor event for the very first time. The Ashlawn Pavilion and a very large tent assured that guests would be comfortable and dry in case of spring showers. The Ashlawn location, with its magnificent views provided the ‘WOW’ factor, along with the unbelievably great food prepared by more than 50 chefs.
No one is a stranger at MEN WHO COOK! The camaraderie and goodwill envelops everyone, and the warmth between friends old and new positively amazing. Some of our MEN WHO COOK! chefs have been serving their specialties since the beginning 22 years ago and there is always a waiting list of new chefs.
The evening began with music by the Tuesday Evening Strings, preview of the silent auction, beverages including lots of micro-brews, and chef-prepared hors d’oeuvres. At 6:30 p.m. the chefs began serving their specialties to eager attendees. Many desserts vanished instantly –‘life is uncertain,’ said one guest, ‘dessert first!’
The bussing of the tables and chef stands, always an unpleasant task, was handled with great aplomb by Project Discovery students and student volunteers from Albemarle High.
The evening was capped by the dynamic Motown sound of The Bootsie Daniels Band. For those who know the band it was a dream come true to have them on this side of the Blue Ridge. For those just discovering Bootsie Daniels it was just plain awesome. Whether one danced, or just observed, it was a memorable experience.
Moonlight and stars and Bootsie Daniels closed the evening and guests departed singing the praises of MEN WHO COOK!
